Planning a visit
How many days do I need to visit Braj?
Many visitors spend two to three days covering Mathura, Vrindavan and a day trip to Gokul, Govardhan or Barsana. A longer stay lets you attend more darshan and walk a parikrama. Our trip planner can help you shape an itinerary.
Where should I stay, Mathura or Vrindavan?
Mathura is convenient for train travel and the Janmabhoomi, while Vrindavan suits visitors who want to attend temple darshan early and late. See accommodation advice in the travel guide.
What is the best time of year to visit?
October to March is generally the most comfortable. Summer is very hot, and the monsoon brings rain and humidity. Festivals are memorable but crowded. Read more in the travel guide.
Can I visit Braj as a day trip from Delhi or Agra?
Yes, a day trip to Mathura and Vrindavan is possible, as Delhi is roughly 3–4 hours away by road and Agra about 55–60 km (approximate). However, an overnight stay makes for a far less rushed visit.
Is Braj suitable for elderly travellers and families?
Yes, with some planning. Expect crowds, steps at some temples and walking in narrow lanes. Choose accommodation close to the temples you want to visit and avoid peak festival days if mobility is a concern.
Temples and darshan
What are the temple timings?
Timings vary between temples and change with the season and festivals, and most temples close for part of the day. Please check with the temple or locally on the day of your visit.
Is there a dress code for temples?
Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees is recommended. Footwear is removed before entering. See temple etiquette for more.
Can I take photographs inside temples?
Photography is restricted or prohibited inside many temples, and some do not allow phones. Follow posted signs and instructions from temple staff.
Can I visit the Krishna Janmabhoomi?
Yes, the Janmabhoomi temple complex in Mathura is open to visitors, with security checks at the entrance. Items such as phones and bags may not be permitted inside. See the Mathura guide.
Getting around
How do I get to Mathura?
Mathura Junction is a major railway station, and the city is well connected by road from Delhi and Agra. The nearest established airports are Agra and Delhi. Details are in the travel guide.
How do I travel between Mathura and Vrindavan?
The two are about 12–15 km apart (approximate) and linked by autos, e-rickshaws, taxis and buses. Agree auto fares before setting off.
How can I visit Govardhan, Barsana and Gokul?
Are vehicles allowed near temples during festivals?
Often not. Authorities usually set up no-vehicle zones and remote parking on major festival days, so be ready to walk. Check local announcements before you travel.
Festivals
When is Janmashtami celebrated?
Janmashtami falls on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami, usually in August or September. The date changes every year, so check a current panchang. See our Janmashtami guide.
Where can I see Lathmar Holi?
Lathmar Holi takes place in Barsana and Nandgaon in the days before Holi. Read the Holi in Braj guide for traditions and safety tips.
Are festivals very crowded?
Yes, major festivals draw very large crowds. Book accommodation early, carry little, and follow instructions from police and temple volunteers.
What other festivals are celebrated in Braj?
Highlights include Radhashtami in Barsana, Govardhan Puja and Annakut after Diwali, and the monsoon Jhulan Utsav in Vrindavan.
